Abstract. By Jean Robert Opgenort, 2004. Paper presented at the 10th Himalayan Languages Symposium. Thimpu, Bhutan, 01 December 2004.
The Kiranti languages are members of the Bodic branch of the Tibeto-Burman language family. On the basis of sound laws and what is known from grammar and morphology, van Driem (2001: 615) proposes four main groups and ten subgroups of Kiranti languages. Today I will discuss the major criteria which enable the identification of subgroups in Kiranti, viz. phonological developments and shared lexical isoglosses.
